As part of the nation's 250th Anniversary celebration, the St. Augustine Heritage Foundation, in collaboration with Interfaith Philadelphia, proudly hosted a well-attended and thought-provoking program, "Religion and the Immigrant Experience: Building This Country Together." The event on Sunday, June 7 brought together community members, historians, faith leaders, and scholars for an engaging discussion on the vital role immigrants and religious diversity have played in shaping the United States.
Moderated by Kathy Rigby, President of the St. Augustine Heritage Foundation, the program explored how the history of religious pluralism in America is deeply intertwined with the immigrant experience and how that legacy continues to inform our nation's future.
Attendees also learned about the remarkable history of St. Augustine Church, itself an immigrant church with a powerful story of perseverance. The church was burned to the ground during the anti-immigrant and anti-Catholic Nativist Riots of 1844, yet rose again as a symbol of faith, resilience, and inclusion in Philadelphia.
The distinguished panel featured:
The lively discussion generated meaningful dialogue among attendees and highlighted the enduring contributions of immigrants and faith communities to the American story. Participants reflected on the challenges and opportunities that have shaped generations of newcomers and explored how religious communities have helped strengthen the social fabric of our nation.
The event was warmly received and served as a fitting tribute to the values of religious freedom, diversity, resilience, and opportunity that continue to define America. As our nation approaches its 250th Anniversary, programs such as this help foster a deeper understanding of the many people, cultures, and faith traditions that have contributed to our shared history.
The St. Augustine Heritage Foundation, together with Interfaith Philadelphia, remains committed to presenting educational programs and community events that celebrate the American experience and honor the diverse voices that have helped build our nation.
